TRACK: Bill Callahan – ‘Let’s Move to the Country’: Bill out-smogs himself

BESIDES being a songwriter we should grasp close to our chests, we’ve seen time and time again this summer that Bill Callahan has an incredible capacity to surprise.

First he goes and pulls a whole new LP out of the hat, Gold Record, laid down quickly and announced unexpectedly.

Then – ka-bam! – he starts revealing a track from it every Monday, which was encoded in the original album press announcement in such an odd way one wasn’t sure whether to believe it or not.

We’ve got our head around that here at Backseat Mafia, but today we’re reeling again, as Bill sits down on his sunny porch for an intimate run through “Let’s Move To The Country” – yep, the metronomic, string-section swathed lovely from Smog’s Knock Knock, ie: Bill covers Bill 20 years down the line.

Drag City say: “Bill’s new rendition finds fresh life, flexibility and freedom in the promise of the next chapter played out in the hinterland – but is it prequel or sequel? Heaven knows.”

Bill’s Gold Record will be released by Drag City on September 4th on mp3, WAV, cassette, CD and vinyl. Fellows assembled before me: place your orders with Drag City here.
