Track: Bill Frisell Trio – We Shall Overcome

Legendary Jazz guitarist Bill Frisell has put together a new trio featuring bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston for a new album Valentine, released on August 14th via Blue Note Records. From it, they’ve released their version of the Civil Rights anthem ‘We shall overcome’. “I’ve been playing the song for years, and I’m going to keep playing it till there is no need anymore,” says Frisell. “I can’t help but hope that day will come.”

Of the album, Frisell goes on to say “This album is all about Rudy and Thomas and the musical relationship I have with them,” says Frisell. “We’ve played a lot for a number of years, but there was no evidence of it, so I really wanted to have a document of it, if only to show that it’s real and not this magical thing that I’ve imagined in my fantasies.”

Certainly there’s some magic happening in the track, which is a laid back version where Frisell holds things together with a stately blues, where he is the focus, but he never crowds the space, instead sharing it. What transpires is something thats frankly lovely.
