Track: Michael CG – When Do I Start Smiling

Multi-talented musician, songwriter and producer Michael CG, has been steadily sharing his creative side over the last couple of years both in local groups, notably Oilbirds who’s EP we reviewed here, and also under his own name.

His recent single ‘When Do I Start Smiling’ may just be some of his best work yet. It’s an eclectic seventies mash of rhythmic synths, floating strings and strained desperate vocals steeped in as much emotion as possible. Extra voices and a woodwind flavouring finish it off in a polyphonic sadness. The name ‘Prince’ has been referred to in comparison and sure the creativity and musicianship is up there, but there’s a much rawer feeling to this that speaks from the heart.

When do I start smiling? About 5 seconds in.
