Retro-soul, funk and R&B duo Bonneville release cover of Zeppelin’s ‘Ten Years Gone’, the lead single from their upcoming third album Hold for Room Tone.
Known for their deep Southern roots and their dedication to preserving and reimagining the sounds of classic soul, Bonneville brings a fresh and soulful twist on a Led Zeppelin hidden gem. The band’s take on ‘Ten Years Gone’ infuses the rock classic with brass, piano, and their signature soul groove. “The original song had no horns or piano backing it,” says lead vocalist Wes McGee. “We wanted to give it a little extra shine.”
Though Bonneville rarely releases cover songs, this track resonated deeply with the band’s own reflections on time, love, and artistic growth. Guitarist, arranger, and co-producer Jeff Hayashi calls the song “a hero’s journey,” noting that its complex arrangement required an almost surgical reconstruction. “Page arranged 14 separate guitar tracks for this song,” Hayashi says. “It was intimidating, but exhilarating. I now understand why so few artists have ever covered it.”
Working alongside producer and mix engineer Starita—known for his work on GRAMMY® Award-winning albums—the band sought to expand the original arrangement while honoring its spirit. “We wanted to embellish upon the symphony of guitars by adding horns and strings to make the production larger than life,” Starita explains. “I think Led Zeppelin would be proud.”
Recorded at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the track features Jeff Hayashi (guitar, co-producer), Wes McGee (lead vocals), Andy Dixon (bass), Brad Kuhn (keys), Justin Holder (drums), and Wes Sheffield (recording and mastering engineer).
