Having spent the better part of two decades quietly evolving into one of modern rock’s most dependable bands, Citizen are preparing to bring their new album Halcyon Blues to Australia next February for what promises to be their biggest headline run on these shores to date.
Fresh from announcing the new record, due out on 7 August via Run For Cover Records/Civilians, the Toledo outfit have confirmed a five-date Australian tour taking in Brisbane’s Tivoli, Sydney’s Liberty Hall, Melbourne’s Forum, Adelaide’s The Gov and Perth’s Magnet House. Joining them on all dates will be fellow American outsiders Drug Church, making their long-awaited return to Australia after intimate Melbourne and Sydney appearances in 2023.
For Citizen, the upcoming run marks a significant step up. The band were last seen in Australia in 2024 as headliners of New Bloom Festival, but the 2027 dates represent their largest standalone venues yet, reflecting the steady growth that has characterised the group’s career since emerging from Toledo’s underground scene nearly two decades ago.
The tour arrives in support of Halcyon Blues, a record that finds Citizen once again broadening their sound. Following the acclaim surrounding lead single ‘Highs and Lows’, the newly unveiled title track showcases a more expansive and melodic side of the band. Vocalist Mat Kerekes describes the song as exploring “a silent disconnect between two people”, further highlighting the emotional depth that has long underpinned Citizen’s music.
