UK darkwave project Lunar & The Deception have released ‘The Great Bison’, their first new material since the arrival of their long-awaited debut album, The Somnambulist, earlier this year.
Arriving after five years of writing, delays and remote collaboration, The Somnambulist established a project willing to bring the intimate and the political into the same frame, enveloping both in the atmospheric, ceremonial production of Michael Rendall, whose credits include The Orb, Peter Murphy and The Jesus & Mary Chain. The album introduced a wider audience to a world shaped by myth, resistance and reinterpreted history, while establishing the project’s distinctive cinematic sound.
‘The Great Bison’ carries that spirit into a very different emotional landscape. At six minutes, it ranks among Lunar & The Deception’s most fully realised work to date, turning away from the album’s outward-facing concerns to contemplate mortality, memory and what might lie beyond it. The song follows a soul’s passage into the afterlife, accompanied by a spectral herd of bison whose stampede seems to reverberate across the boundary between the living and the dead.
The track begins almost as a whisper before gradually gathering momentum. Strings swell, percussion takes on increasing weight and the vocals rise with the growing intensity, eventually breaking into a thundering, cathartic climax. The arrangement mirrors the journey at the heart of the song, transforming its meditation on death into something physical, expansive and almost ritualistic.
Yet for all its darkness, ‘The Great Bison’ is ultimately a song about hope. Loss is presented not simply as an ending but as a transformation, with those who have disappeared continuing to influence the lives of those left behind. The song suggests that love survives in altered forms, becoming part of the landscape we carry with us.

Led by frontwoman, poet and activist Britt Xyra Dusk, Lunar & The Deception have developed a distinctive blend of ritualistic performance, richly literary songwriting and cinematic atmosphere. The project’s music exists at the intersection of art and activism, with Dusk’s Irish-South African heritage and career as an award-winning film and television costume designer informing both its visual identity and immersive approach to performance.
Having previously appeared at Glastonbury in 2016 and 2019, Lunar & The Deception have built a world in which music, theatre, imagery and social conscience exist side by side. The project’s theatrical live performances expand on the mythology and atmosphere of its recorded work, creating an experience that extends beyond the music itself.
That world will take centre stage when the project headlines An Evening with Lunar & The Deception at The Hootenanny, Brixton, on 23 September 2026. Conceived as an immersive headline performance, the show will feature the project’s full theatrical stage production, incorporating visuals, dancers and theatrical performance alongside a supporting lineup.
