PREMIERE: The Mortal Prophets make an instant impact with debut single ‘Stomp the Devil’

What do you get when you cross post-war blues with experimental rock and electronica before bringing in one-time Captain Beefheart member Gary Lucas on guitar and composition duties? Hell if we know (pun very much intended) but it’d probably sound something similar to John Beckmann’s new gig, the Mortal Prophets.

It’s both a band (of ‘genre-bending roustabouts’, no less) and a project led by Beckmann, with more details to follow we bet, but for now, we can tell you that their debut album is done and due for release this year. As a taster, Beckmann’s releasing the Stomp the Devil EP in a little under two months; and with that news comes the unveiling of the video for its title track and the Mortal Prophets’ debut single.

We’re premiering the clip below. A little bit blues, a little bit no-wave, quite a bit of Beckmann playing the character of a literal manic street preacher; it sounds bewildering on paper but the results are superb. The EP lands Friday July 8th, see if this piques your interest:
