Track: NATI. Swaps Folk For Addictive Alt-Pop on New Single ‘JOAN’

Scottish rising star NATI. shares the infectious new single ‘JOAN’, shedding her folk roots in favour of a confident, vibrant alt-pop soundscape comparable to Christine and the Queens and HAIM.

The track serves as a daring reinvention for the artist who has already captivated nearly two million devoted followers and gained millions of streams. Dropping the celtic acoustic folk aesthetics of previous releases and instead treading new ground through inventive electronic production, blended with tight live drums, bass and guitar. Raw yet polished and unquestionably commercially viable, the track delivers a vibrant contemporary flair whilst retaining the authenticity that first drew fans in.

“Joan is magic. Joan is timeless. Joan is all of us,” NATI. explains. “Joan is flawed, troubled, beautiful, light and dark. She is perfection. And she doesn’t exist.

I was sick of writing about myself. I wanted to do something I’d never done before: a name song. I’ve always been a very lyric orientated writer, and that’s a great thing, but it can also sometimes hinder my creative juices as I tend to overthink or overexplain everything I write about. That day, for whatever reason, I didn’t want to overthink. I saw Joan in my head, I let that take over and I wrote about her.”

Crafted alongside producer PALMR (Bloom Twins, Frozemode), the track was mixed by Adrian Hall (Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp, Nova Twins, Robyn), creating a sonic palette that expertly balances organic instrumentation with vocal chops and heavy 808 bass to create what NATI. describes as “organic alt-pop that not only jumps out of a record but kicks off on stage.”

With her third EP on the horizon, NATI. stands at the threshold of something bigger. She’s shed the constraints of her folk origins without losing the storytelling instincts. NATI. will join Newton Faulkner on the UK leg of his highly anticipated ‘Octopus’ tour, kicking off in Norwich on October 13th.
