“It’s nature’s way of telling you in a song” said Randy California and artists like Nico Georis create through that connection. A gifted classical pianist who stepped beyond such disciplined restrictions to live along a more experimental causeway, Georis has in the past been energised by different organics, from plant life to more barren terrains. ‘Shirley Shirley Shirley !’ from 2019 brought the sound of ethereal other worlds to us via midi technology, living fauna and synthesiser circuitry. Then his 2022 ‘Desert Mirror’ record captured piano sessions from an abandoned studio on the edge of Death Valley.
Now comes the announcement from Leaving Records of his latest natural encounter, the ‘Cloud Suites’ album due on June 9th. It’s a formulation of ambient keyboard pieces recorded in real time as he watched the changing skies through the windows of his Big Sur cabin studio. After collecting these musical sketches for over three years, Georis took the impressions to a more conventional space, added piano/synthesiser detailing and sonic coherence to arrive at the final ‘Cloud Suites’ assemblage.
Listening to ‘Ice Crystals’, the first glimpse from the full record, you sense the expansive joy, uplift and realisation that we can expect. Layers of trickling, harp-like delicacy, the rolling wash of a calm melody and the drifting tonal shades, all bring images to hold onto. This is music that is alive with peaceful purpose and made to float on.
