Track/Video: Lo-fi songsmiths Ernold Same preview new EP ‘The Reader’ with the weary pop wonder of ‘Together’.

DIY troubadour, singer-songwriter and purveyor of lo-fi lucidity Chris Barrett reveals his new post Post Yoga project, the Syd B/Blur referencing Ernold Same. Working with fellow Bristolian resident, musician and producer Connor Jones, the duo will be releasing their debut Ernold Same offering, ‘The Reader EP’ on 15th September via Nothing Fancy.

So what to expect from the Mac de Marco-esque Barrett’s latest endeavour? More of the lockdown imposed luddism of bristling and sharp Post Yoga tunes where he recorded songs using a charity shop Yamaha keyboard. Maybe it will be back to the garage guitar pop of his earlier stuff as Something Anorak or his reflective angular acoustic stories as Pictures of Belgrade?

The first preview from the upcoming EP Living Thing put a break up ballad in a big chord chorus frame with a real emotional drive. More direct it showed Barrett breaking new ground through his musical partnership with Jones but without losing the edge of those DIY sensibilities. Now comes the second trailer from next month’s release, the honest and heartfelt Together. A dark folk strum, a string section swoon, a woozy hook and Barrett’s weary croon all soundtrack this losing love song. Hints of scaled down Tindersticks and early years Timber Timbre are there but this sound is very much their own, very Ernold Same.
