Los Angeles-born artist Ren Martinez is stepping into her boldest and arguably most exciting chapter yet. Already landing spots across Spotify editorials, the new ‘The First & Last of the Perfect Parties’ has race to over 200k streams and cements the rising singer-songwriter as a rising star.
The song, a standout preview from her forthcoming debut album Fingers Crossed (due this fall), blends indie rock punch, with pop songwriting, and poignant storytelling. Rooted in a real house party memory — think half-empty Solo cups, lawn-side pizza slices, and a brush with the cops — the track is both dreamy and grounded, a love letter to the moments that shape us long before we realise how much they mattered.
“The first line of this song came from a drunk group text during early COVID,” Ren recalls. “We were talking about the wildest college party we ever went to. I said, ‘I was 100% sober eating pizza on the lawn when the cops came.’ My friend said that sounded like a lyric. And I said, ‘I’ll try to write that song tomorrow cause I’m too drunk today.’ And I did.”
That offhand memory became the seed of a song that now echoes with the brightness of Fountains of Wayne, the intimacy of Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers, and the emotional clarity and commercial flare of early Taylor Swift. Produced by Brian Robert Jones, a longtime collaborator and friend, the track leans confidently into power pop and emo-tinged indie rock, layering Ren’s warm vocals over propulsive guitars and shimmering textures.
Though still early in her musical journey, Martinez is no stranger to the spotlight. Formerly releasing music under the name Ren Farren, she first turned heads with her 2017 single ‘Good Girl‘, which earned a spot on Billboard’s 25 Best Rock Songs of the Year. Her genre-blending sound — Laurel Canyon folk rock fused with early-2000s pop sheen — has landed syncs on hit shows like Hacks, New Girl, Single Parents, and The Young and the Restless.
Now under a sync deal with Aperture Music, known for their work on shows like Girls, High Fidelity, and Swarm, Ren is gearing up to release a ten-track album chronicling the lessons and losses of post-young adulthood. “It’s about the growing up you do after you thought you were already grown,” she says.
