TRACK: Big Bad Mama Jama – ‘Memory’: steel city funksters forge forward

STEEL CITY funksters Big Bad Mama Jama got together just last year in Sheffield. Their mission? To “bring you the biggest baddest mama jams”.

And today they release their second single, “Memory” ahead of their debut EP, Summer’s Here To Stay, which will be with us on August 21st.

Powering ahead on a rush of electric piano and Hannah Wragg’s vocal range and fluidity, “Memory” is about that exhausting internal struggle to push past a lost love. Brass stabs give crispness and a funk-rock guitar shreds up before the breakdown. “I want you to stay with me before the memory flies away,” Hannah implores.

Big, ensemble instrumental funk-soul-disco ain’t a one-man operation – think Earth, Wind & Fire – so maybe we should introduce the players.

Alongside Hannah, that guitar shred came courtesy James Thompson. Ignacio Vasquez Castro gave the cool key licks; Leo Keonig, drums, and bassist Ed Holt underpin the groove. Luke Bonsey appears on sax, and has a line in percussion too; Jack Stott is also blowin’ up on the sax; Molly Sykes is on the trumpet, bringing the brass back home.

Citing Sister Sledge, Chic, Chaka Khan, Roy Ayers and The Meters among a dizzying range of influences, Big Bad Mama Jama are intent on tapping into the main vein of the dancefloor.
