Feature: A Buyer’s Guide to DEVO

Devo: Oh No, It’s Devo

OH NO! IT’S DEVO

As the leading synthpop bands of the era started to delve into guitars, funk and sax solos, in 1982 Devo perversely took the opposite tack, with this heavily electronic album. With synths to the fore, yet another new image and a videogame sensibility, it positively gleams with sequencers and shiny beats. Critics and fans alike were perplexed, but as ever Devo set out to confound expectation. A synchronised live show was attempted but the primitive technology of the time had yet to catch up with their vision, so it was heroic but flawed. Still, as a synthpop album this one is up there with the best of ’em.
