News: Vargen Unveils New Single ‘CASANOVA’

Swedish singer-songwriter Vargen returns with the new single ‘CASANOVA’.

A sultry, jazz-tinted folk-rock track that glides through dark theatrical chord changes and poetic lyricism, the track is comparable to the likes of Nick Cave and Tom Waits. Carried forward by Vargen’s smokey, expressive lead vocals, the track is a restrained and controlled yet still depthy, shanty-esque grower.

Taking its title from the infamous 18th-century Italian adventurer and libertine, ‘CASANOVA’ is more than just a name-drop. It’s a character study set to music, a lyrical waltz through the ages of charmers, schemers, and leaders whose charisma teeters on the edge of the toxic. Vargen, the musical guise of Reine Johansson, threads these themes with poetic precision, balancing allure and unease with masterful tension.

Talking about the track, Vargen explains: “I find the attraction of toxic charisma fascinating. It seems that it’s been there ever since the ancient days of politician Caesar through libertine Casanova to modern days’ leaders and pop cultural icons. In fairytales all ends well if you’ve been good, but in reality you’re often better off being bad if you want to attract some people. I find that provocation in pop culture or art can be refreshing and it can offer new perspectives. But there’s something very ugly and depressing with bad manors and bullying when performed by world leaders and their following. But as far as history goes those leaders get a hard downfall.”

His reflections ground the single in a broader historical context, connecting the dots between mythic figures and modern-day icons — a signature approach for an artist who has built his name on reinterpreting legends. Whether through his haunting Dylan covers or his original storytelling, Vargen has developed a reputation for crafting music that feels both intimate and epic.

After earning critical acclaim for his self-titled debut of original material — a project propelled by an atmospheric concert video — Vargen has been spotlighted by international outlets including Earmilk, The Big Takeover, and Vents. His music dances between rock’s rawness and folk’s introspection, often cloaked in a sense of Nordic mystery.

As 2025 approaches, Vargen’s musical compass points toward a new full-length album, with CASANOVA setting the tone — sophisticated yet soulful, provocative yet poetic. Fans can expect a continued journey through stories of screen icons, street legends, and the cultural myths that define our modern landscape.

With CASANOVA, Vargen doesn’t just sing a song — he conjures a world. And like the character it’s named for, the single lingers long after it’s gone, leaving listeners entranced, unsettled, and craving more.
